Hi families,
Just a reminder your child is being tested on their Quarter 1 words this week because the end of the quarter is Friday, October 25.
These words were in the open house folders given to you at the beginning of the year. These are words that are imperative for your child to know. The more they know, the better reader they will become. These are 100 of the most commonly seen words in texts that are appropriate for a first grader. Some of the words are a review from what they learned in Kindergarten.
Also, Friday will be our show and tell day. Your child can bring something in to show the class. Please make sure it is school appropriate and please refrain from sending your child with any expensive electronics. I would like to make sure that none of them are broken or lost. Please leave those at home.
Next week will be a short and busy week. On Wednesday, October 30th the Orland Park Fire Department will be bringing their Fire Safety Trailer. Each class will get to go through the trailer and learn about fire safety at home. This goes along with October being fire safety month.
On Thursday, October 31 we will be having our Fall Carnival. Please let me know if your child should not be wearing a costume. Also, if your child does not have a costume but would like to wear one, please let me know so we can make sure your child has one to wear. Our carnival time is from 8:50-9:20. They will get to wear their costume for this 30 minute block and then will be changing out of them to have their regular class time.
Please remember that your child will be taking their spelling test on Thursday instead of Friday because Friday, November 1 is a Teacher's Institute and the children will not be in attendance.
That is all for now. As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Happy Long Weekend!
Hello families!
I hope you are all enjoying your child's time in first grade. I thank you all for being so involved in your child's education and being so open to communicate with me whenever needed.
Your child was tested on their unit 1 high frequency words this week. Please take note of any that do not have a plus sign next to it. If it does not have a plus sign, your child could not read that word. Please practice and reinforce at home. These words are very important to your child's success with reading.
Please remember that the homework sent home is due the next day. It is important that the skills are being reinforced at home after they are taught at school. The end of the quarter is near and we will be wrapping up chapter 3 at the end of the week next week.
Spelling lists and three times each will be sent home tomorrow because of the short week. I want your child to have enough time to practice their spelling words.
I hope you all have a great long weekend! And as always, please let me know if you have any questions!

Great Start!
We had a great start to the school year! Boy, have we been busy! We have been making class books, reviewing our kindergarten words from last year as well as our letter sounds, and we also got to make a few fun crafts!
This week we are beginning our core subjects and we will be sticking more closely to our schedule. Please remind your child how important it is to listen, focus, and complete our work.
We began the math series on Thursday last week. Please expect your child to have a sheet of math homework every night. I do need all homework to come in completed the next day. If it becomes a problem, your child will be asked to stay in during their second recess to complete it. Homework is an essential part of learning and review. We need to ensure that our children are remembering what they are learning in school.
Our math program is very rigorous and scheduled. We begin each day by completing a Daily Common Core Review. We do this page together and each one of these pages reviews skills that your child has learned previously and may not always go with what we are learning in that particular lesson. These pages are important to refresh their memory of skills they have already learned. After the Daily Common Core Review, we watch an introduction video for the lesson. In this video, they will walk through a typical problem that they will be seeing throughout the lesson. After this video, we complete the lesson pages. We do the front page together (this is the teaching part) and then we typically will move straight to the back which is the problem solving part. Problem solving is a BIG part of the common core. This page is read to them by myself and I also talk them through the problems as well. We like to talk through these together. I sometimes will have the children work them out on their own as this is a skill that they will need when they begin taking more assessments that are aligned to the common core. Inquiry and problem solving skills are a big push. After the problem solving page, we move to the inside. Depending on the lesson, we will do the guided practice together and they will complete the independent practice on their own, or they will be able to do both pages on their own. Some lessons do however, require us to work through all of the problems together. After the lesson we will complete the quick check. The Quick Check is important and it shows me what skills each child is doing well with as well as what skills that child still needs to work on. The Quick Check is read to them but they are required to choose the correct answers on their own.
We also began our reading series today. Every Monday we will go through the oral vocabulary, high-frequency words, and the spelling words and patterns for the week. Then we read our weekly story, retell the story, and complete a vocabulary Fill-In the blank activity and a spelling sentence activity. For now, we will be completing the Fill-In and the spelling sentences together. However, the fourth week of the series they will be using their books and completing these on their own. It is important for them to not only become familiar enough with the vocabulary to be able to fill in the blanks but they are also taught the skills to use their books to find familiar phrases, sentences, and words to help them figure it out. Writing sentences with words are also important. They will be expected to use all 10 words (they may use more than one spelling word in each sentence) and the sentences need to be 5 words or longer. They will also be graded on their ability to use and frequency of punctuation and capitalization.
Your child will receive a list of words to study over the five weeks at the beginning of each reading unit.
On Mondays, your child will bring home the weekly spelling list and have to write their spelling words three times each for homework and return it to school the next day.
On Thursdays, your child will bring home their reading book and their comprehension journal. They will need to read the weekly story to you, have you sign the reading slip, and fill out a page in the comprehension journal to go along with the story. Please return all three (comprehension journal, reading slip, and reading book) to school on Friday.
On Wednesdays, your child will bring home a story to read and answer questions about. Please return these to school on Thursday.
Spelling tests are on Friday mornings, first thing.
Lastly, we will be beginning The Daily 5 in the classroom tomorrow. For those families that have been a part of District 135 for kindergarten will be familiar with it. This program will allow each students' needs to be met in different ways. They will be Working on Writing, Reading to Someone, Reading to Self, Working on Words, and Listening to Reading. These stations will allow me to individualize your child's learning and to focus on the skills they need most. This also teaches them independence and responsibility.
I know that this is a lot of information so if you have ANY questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Welcome!
Welcome to first grade and to a great new school year!! We have had a great first week and the kids seem to be adjusting to the change very well. I have really enjoyed getting to know your children and look forward to the year ahead.
Here are a few updates and reminders for the next few weeks.
Please make sure their blue Park School folder (or as we call it, their take home folder) is in their backpack and returned to school every day. We will be using this folder to take anything home that I need to get to you and if you could place anything that needs to come to me in there every day, I can make sure that I get the information from there.
Also, it is a long time from when your child gets on the bus to lunch time at 11:15 so please send your child to school with a HEALTHY snack. We are promoting a healthy life style and getting them into the routine of becoming healthy individuals at an early age. Please make sure the snack you send is on the approved snack list. We ask that anything with peanut butter be eaten for lunch only. With many other students in and out of our classrooms throughout the day, it is difficult to make sure the peanut butter is not anywhere in the room. It is easier for us to regulate that in the lunch room than it is in the classroom.
I also ask that you only send water with your child for snack. We try to keep water only because of spills. If juice is spilled in the classroom, desks and floors become sticky. Your child is allowed to bring a water bottle to keep on their desk throughout the day as well. If the water bottles become a distraction however, they will be asked to put them back into their backpack.
Please remember that if your child is going to go home a different way, we need to know as soon as possible so that the boarding process can go smoothly at the end of the day.
Next week we will be beginning our math series, enVisions. The week will be spent reviewing what they learned in the series from kindergarten. We will start off working whole group, but eventually we will be doing math centers and small groups to best meet each students' needs.
We will also be testing them on the beginning of the year placement exam for this year. This will provide us with the information we need to best meet your child's needs in the classroom. These assessments will be completed in the computer lab on Tuesday morning at 8:15.
Please remember to return all health, transportation, technology, and bus safety forms. These need to be in as soon as possible so we have all important information in the office.
We will also begin working on our DOL (Daily Oral Language) next week. This will be comprised of many different tasks such as copying sentences, editing sentences, and working on grammar skills. This may include identifying nouns, adjectives, and verbs.
I know there is an overwhelming amount of information so of course if you need anything at all, do not hesitate to contact me.

We had our class picnic today and had a blast! We got really lucky with the weather and were able to have the whole party before it started drizzling forcing us to go inside.
The moms that planned and helped out with the party did such a great job and really made a picnic where our kids could have fun and enjoy their time.
We ate pizza on our beach towels with friends, made ice cream sundaes, made picture frames that had a class picture and all of our friends' names on them, played a duck game and got tattoos, played Bozo Buckets, had a birdie toss, and also played egg and spoon relay games as well!
Overall it was a great day and the kids seemed to have a lot of fun!
Friday will be our last spelling test and then we will be working on some really fun end of the year activities for the end of the school year!
It's coming so fast and the kids seem like they've grown a foot over night lately! Can't wait to continue having fun together until the last day of school!

Home Stretch!
Another week has gone and flown by for us! Oh my!
This week we finished our last chapter in Math, have taken the chapter test, our chapter 13-16 benchmark test, and our end of the year test. Coming up for the last two weeks are 10 step up to second grade lessons. These lessons will give them a taste of what they will be covering in the first few weeks/months of second grade with enVisions.
We will also be exploring more of our favorite authors, Laura Numeroff and Tom Lichtenheld.
Next week, Wednesday, will be our end of the year picnic. This will take place from 1-2pm in the field next to the playground. We're really hoping for nice weather so the kids can get outside. I will be sending a reminder note home with your child on Tuesday but I will also post it on here.
We will be eating pizza on this day. The kids will still need to bring/buy a lunch because we will not be eating the pizza until around 1pm. This is too long for them to go without eating. The pizza will be more of a snack than a meal. I also ask that you send them to school with a beach towel because we will be sitting and eating in the grass.
Our room moms are planning a few fun games and a craft for our party as well. If you do come to the picnic, please no younger siblings, I would not like to see them hurt and there will also only be enough for our class to eat and work on.
As the next 7 days go by, please remind your child how important it is to be respectful, understanding, and safe. Also please remind them that school is not over just because we have 7 days left. We still have a lot of learning to do and it is hindered by behaviors that they exhibit this close to the end of the school year. I am as excited as they are but we still have so much to do and I want to enjoy and have fun doing it!
As always, thank you so much for all of your support and hard work behind the scenes! Your devotion and help will make your child a successful person in the future!

Oh My!
Oh my! There are only 17 days left of school and we have hit the ground runnin'! After finishing up two weeks of MAP assessments and our Easy CBM Fluency assessments, we completed a new reading level benchmark on your child and finished our final writing sample.
I am very proud of how far your children have come since the beginning of the school year!!
However, with that being said, please remind your child that although 17 days may not seem like much, we still have a LOT of learning to do and it is very important to focus, work hard, and complete everything to the best of their ability! School isn't over until the bell rings at 10:00am on June 6! I like to fill their heads with loads of learning all the way until the end!
Also, I have noticed that many of my permanent markers have been making their way out of their cup and disappearing. Please do me a favor and check your child's backpack and belongings for any runaway markers. It is important to me that they are returned to their home as soon as possible.
Just a reminder that your child's permission slip for Walk in the Park is due no later than Thursday, May 16!! Walk in the Park is on Friday, May 17 and if your child does not have their permission slip in and comes to school, they will not be able to participate with us. If for some reason you do not want your child to attend, please let me know as soon as possible!!
Walk in the Park is always a TON of fun and I am really looking forward to it!!
That is all for now! Please remind them to have fun but to come to school prepared to learn!

Week of 4/29
Hello families!
We took our first two MAP tests on Tuesday and Thursday last week and the kids did really well! A lot of them have showed a lot of progress from Fall to Spring. I am very proud of the hard work they put in and at how well they were able to focus when taking the test.
Remember, please discuss that these assessments are important for them to focus and take their time on and please make sure they get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast before they leave the house because we test first thing in the morning. We will be testing this week on Tuesday and Thursday at the same time. This week is the two math tests which are longer than the reading. We allot an hour for these assessments instead of 30 minutes like the reading ones. They will take two of those. If they do need more than an hour for the assessments, they will be allowed to have that.
I hope you had a great weekend!

Welcome Back!
Hi Families!
Welcome back to school and welcome to the third quarter! I am very excited to be entering into the third quarter with your children. We are re-testing the students' reading levels, reading fluency, math skills, and they are also taking the MAP tests again. It is great to see how much progress your child has been making throughout the past two quarters. I am very proud of them.
Please remember that it is very important for the next two weeks to talk to your child about taking their time and trying their best on these assessments they will be taking as well as making sure they get enough sleep and eat a good breakfast before they come to school.
Thank you for the support you have been showing at home. Please continue to support your child in completing their homework and trying their best in school.
I have seen a lot of positive changes in your children this year. These next two quarters will prove to amaze you with the progress your child will have made by the end of the year. We are beginning to write paragraphs in class. At the end of the year your child will be expected to write a paragraph with a topic sentence, three detail sentences, and a closing sentence. It is amazing when they become closer to this goal.
Coming up, we will begin math centers and small guided math groups for the math lessons. If you want to volunteer to help during center time, please return the volunteer form by the end of the week at the latest.
Also, due tomorrow is the January book order. I will be sending home a letter with your child's new reading level after all students are done being tested.
Report cards will go home on Friday, please make sure you return the report card envelope signed by the end of next week.
I think that is it for now, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks!
