Week of 10/6/14

Your children did a great job with centers this week. We are slowly getting into the routine and learning the expectations during this time.

This week your child will be reading "How You Grew" in reading, doing their first word sort for Words Their Way, and finishing up the subtraction unit. The topic 2 assessment will be given on Tuesday.

We will be beginning the new topic on Wednesday. We will be working with addition and subtraction on 10 frames.

Please remember if you have not done so already, please send your child to school with an old shirt for their art shirt. I would hate to see any of your child's clothing ruined from painting in art class.

Thank you for making sure your child completes their homework and reads every night. It will really be helpful to their success in school.

Week of 9/29/14

We finished our first week of centers this week and it went well. I feel that the students really enjoyed working at their own pace and playing games with their classmates. You will see their center sheet come home with their centers attached to the first page. We are still working on routines, expectations, and directions. This week, your child will be required to complete all 10 centers again but this time, all but 1 center will require them to record their answers on a recording sheet for each center. If your child finishes all 10 centers, they will get permission to go to the bonus centers, 11 & 12 which are typically more challenging and require them to follow directions.

I will have a center mom now 4 days a week to help the students as they have any questions during center time. If your child turns their center folder in early, I do go through them, and I check each center for completeness and mark for corrections to be made. They are able to correct anything that needs it as well as go back and complete centers as needed.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

This week we will be beginning to do picture sorts as a class to get the students into the routine of doing words their way.

Great job helping your child remember their library books every Monday! We are the class with the most stars at the moment!

Week of 9/22/14

Hi families!

I have been working on getting to know your children more so I can find the best ways to help them be successful in first grade.

I will be switching from whole-group to small-group math daily. I find that with most students, they can focus better and I can give my full attention to every child as opposed to in a whole-group setting.

While I am working with 4-5 students at a time, the rest of the students are completing centers every day. Your child has 5 days, an hour or more each day, to finish 10 centers and 2 bonus centers if they happen to finish early.

Some weeks the centers will be interdisciplinary and have writing, reading, science and social studies, as well as math and others will be mostly math. I try to incorporate skills that the students are learning and/or struggling with at that point in time to strengthen and practice those skills.

You will see a center sheet with the center papers stapled to them every Monday. I grade centers every weekend to make sure your child is understanding and completing their work.

I pushed back the start time of our reading series and am starting that this week. This week your child will bring home the comprehension journal, reading slip, and reading book to complete. Please make sure all three are returned on Friday completed.

The students did a great job on their first math assessment in the classroom. Their next assessment will be approximately Wednesday or Thursday next week, depending on how quickly we get through the next 5 lessons of Topic 2.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Week of 9/15/14

This week we will be finishing Topic 1 in math and will be taking our assessment on Tuesday. Please go over the 8 lessons with your child as a refresher before they take the assessment. Your child will not have math homework on Tuesday night.

We will be starting Topic 2 on Wednesday. Math homework will begin again on Wednesday night.

We will be beginning our first reading story, Pam and Sam, and we will be getting into Daily 5 more as well.

Every Thursday night, your child will be bringing their hard cover reading book, a reading slip, and comprehension journal home. Please read the story with your child, fill out a page in the book (no coloring with marker in it please) and sign the reading slip. Please return all three to school the next day.

Library books are due tomorrow!!

Your child will be tested on the Start Smart words tomorrow and Tuesday for a grade.

Monday: Math 1-8 homework
Tuesday: Comprehension Story
Wednesday: Writing Page & Math 2-1
Thursday: Reading Story, Comprehension Journal, Reading Slip, & Math 2-2

Week of 9/8/14

Hello there, Families!

Here is your weekly update:
The kids have been doing a great job adjusting to first grade and I have had so much fun with them this past week. They are already more than halfway to our goal with our compliment chain and it has only been 9 days of school. I have a feeling that this year will be full of fun rewards and lots of learning.

It was so great meeting all of the families that were able to make it to Open House on Thursday. I hope to meet those of you that were unable to make it very soon!

Thank you for signing up for the many new technology opportunities I provide throughout the year to keep you informed on how your child is doing. I believe in a positive home/school connection and I like for there to be no surprises (good or bad) when we meet in November. I think that in order for your child to become a successful citizen and student, it is a team effort on our part.

We started our math series this week and the kids seem to be settling into the routine pretty well. They will have homework every night unless we have an assessment. The first assessment is currently scheduled for Tuesday, September 16. Your child will take a quiz every day after each lesson which will count as a part of their grade for math. I use these quizzes to decide what I need to reteach and what the kids get.

Please return the directory slips if you would like your child's information to be included into our class directory. The deadline is Friday, September 12.

Here is a look at the upcoming week:
Tuesday, September 9: Fall Pictures
Wednesday, September 10: Beginning of the year math assessment

Happy Long Weekend!

I hope you are enjoying your long weekend with your kids!

Just a couple of things before next week:

-We will be starting all of our reading and math curriculum next week and trying to get the kids into the daily routine.

-Your child will have homework Tuesday and Wednesday night this week only.
*Tuesday night homework: Please read the story with your child and help them answer the questions on the back and return it Wednesday morning.
*Wednesday night homework: Please read the attached note for the homework. In first grade we expect the use of details in their pictures, and the use of at LEAST 5 colors. We also begin to expect that your child use correct colors for hair and any other items they may include in their pictures. The pictures do not have to be works of art, but they need to follow the guidelines. Their sentences need to be complete with a capital letter at the beginning and the correct end mark and they must write at LEAST 3 sentences.

-Please remember if you have not sent in the transportation, health, technology, or any other forms that you received, in yet they need to be in as soon as possible.

-If you have any trouble signing up for Class Dojo or Remind 101, just let me know and I will do my best to help you out.

-Please send your child to school with a snack from the approved snack list daily. We do not provide snack in first grade as they did in Kindergarten.

-If you send in any lunch money, please send it in a baggie or envelope and write what it is for on it. I would hate for the money to get lost or for me to not know who gave it to me and what it was for. It must be labeled in order to get it to the right place.

-If you plan on changing your child's transportation, you must send a note with your child or call the office or your child will be sent home the way you indicated at the beginning of the year.

-If you plan on sending your child home on the regular yellow school bus or are picking them up and they normally attend an after school activity, please let not only me know, but also the after school program that your child isn't going home that way. They have them on their list unless you notify them and it helps the process if we are not trying to find what bus the child is supposed to be on.

I think that is it for now. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns! :)

Have a great rest of your weekend!

Class Dojo Mix-Up

Hello Families,

Please double check your child's Class Dojo log in sheet that was sent home on Monday. I think with the confusion of the first time getting their mail in the classroom, some students may have gotten someone else's mail by mistake. If by any chance you have a log in sheet that is not yours, please send it back to school and I will send the correct one home with your child.

If you already signed up on someone else's by accident, please let me know and I will help you fix it.

Thank you for your help and sorry for any confusion!

Welcome First Graders!

Welcome to the first day of first grade! It's going to be a great year and I can't wait to meet all of your precious little ones!

There will be a blue folder coming home with your child after the first day of school. This folder is VERY important at our school.

Please make sure you go through all of the information in the folder as soon as possible. Please return any important forms that need to come back to myself or the office. Important forms include health, transportation, and technology. These need to be back as soon as possible.

This folder will go home with your child every night (homework and important information from myself and/or the office will be in there) and needs to come back to school with them every day. It is an important and easy way to keep everything in order.

Also, please send in the necessary supplies as soon as possible as we will be using them from the very first day of school. :)

Please remember that your child needs to bring a snack that is on the approved snack list. If it is not on the snack list, your child will not be allowed to eat it.

If your child will be buying lunch, please add money on their online account or send a baggie or envelope with the money inside and their name and my name on it. Milk money should also be sent in the same way.

Please refrain from sending your child to school in flip flops or shoes with no backs. This makes recess and fire drills more dangerous to them and other children.

I look forward to the year ahead and I will provide more information as the week goes on and things get a little more settled for you and your family!

Please remember to return the play slip if you will be attending our Earth Day Play by Friday, April 11 so we can make sure there is enough room in the classroom for you to enjoy all of our hard work!

Also, if you have not completed and returned your child's costume for the play please have that completed and sent in as soon as possible.

Lastly, in the next few weeks your child will be completing all end of the year testing such as MAP Tests, Reading Benchmarking, and Writing Samples. Please make sure they are at school on time and that they have a healthy breakfast before they come to school so they can focus and show their potential!

I look forward to all of the fun that is in store for us in the last 7 weeks of school!
