Welcome!

Welcome to first grade and to a great new school year!!  We have had a great first week and the kids seem to be adjusting to the change very well.  I have really enjoyed getting to know your children and look forward to the year ahead.

Here are a few updates and reminders for the next few weeks.

Please make sure their blue Park School folder (or as we call it, their take home folder) is in their backpack and returned to school every day.  We will be using this folder to take anything home that I need to get to you and if you could place anything that needs to come to me in there every day, I can make sure that I get the information from there.

Also, it is a long time from when your child gets on the bus to lunch time at 11:15 so please send your child to school with a HEALTHY snack.  We are promoting a healthy life style and getting them into the routine of becoming healthy individuals at an early age.  Please make sure the snack you send is on the approved snack list.  We ask that anything with peanut butter be eaten for lunch only.  With many other students in and out of our classrooms throughout the day, it is difficult to make sure the peanut butter is not anywhere in the room.  It is easier for us to regulate that in the lunch room than it is in the classroom.

I also ask that you only send water with your child for snack.  We try to keep water only because of spills.  If juice is spilled in the classroom, desks and floors become sticky.  Your child is allowed to bring a water bottle to keep on their desk throughout the day as well.  If the water bottles become a distraction however, they will be asked to put them back into their backpack.

Please remember that if your child is going to go home a different way, we need to know as soon as possible so that the boarding process can go smoothly at the end of the day.

Next week we will be beginning our math series, enVisions.  The week will be spent reviewing what they learned in the series from kindergarten.  We will start off working whole group, but eventually we will be doing math centers and small groups to best meet each students' needs.

We will also be testing them on the beginning of the year placement exam for this year.  This will provide us with the information we need to best meet your child's needs in the classroom.  These assessments will be completed in the computer lab on Tuesday morning at 8:15.

Please remember to return all health, transportation, technology, and bus safety forms.  These need to be in as soon as possible so we have all important information in the office.

We will also begin working on our DOL (Daily Oral Language) next week.  This will be comprised of many different tasks such as copying sentences, editing sentences, and working on grammar skills.  This may include identifying nouns, adjectives, and verbs.

I know there is an overwhelming amount of information so of course if you need anything at all, do not hesitate to contact me.
