Week of 9/17
This week was our last week of the preliminary lessons for reading and we also have been in week two of our new math series. I hope you are finding the math homework easy to complete with your child. I like to include the reteach page on the homework so it is easier for you to be able to help your child if needed. Please let me know if your child is struggling a bit more than usual with any particular lesson. Sometimes they leave school looking like they're in good shape but it often happens where the students may forget how to complete something when they get home. That's alright because we are still learning and practice makes perfect.
Next week we will be in full swing with all subjects. We are going to begin the reading series and the weekly reading homework. Your child will be tested on the words that were sent home last week on Monday.
Here is a look at how a typical week will work when reading begins and they start bringing home homework.
Every Monday, I will introduce the story of the week, the spelling words, and we will read the story a few times. Your child will be quizzed on their understanding of the story on Mondays and will also practice writing spelling sentences and completing vocabulary worksheets in class.
Things sent home on Mondays:
-Spelling list (Your child will be tested on the 10 spelling words and the 5 challenge words on the back-I always tell the students to try the challenge words but they are not included in their overall spelling grades).
-Three times each-Please have your child write their spelling words three times each and send it back to school the next day.
Things sent home on Thursdays:
-Reading Book
-Reading slip (please have your child read the story to you and have them sign it and you need to sign it and return it to school as well)
-Comprehension journal (Please have your child fill out one page every Thursday to go along with this week's story and return it to school the next day).
Fridays are spelling test days. Please make sure your child studies these and is prepared on Fridays. They will also be asked to write two dictation sentences using spelling words of my choosing.
Your child's first math test will be on Monday.
We are beginning a unit on animals in Science and a unit on families in Social Studies this week.
I hope your child is enjoying their time in first grade so far!!

Week of 9/7/12
Hi families! Here's a look at what's coming up this week:
We will begin MAP testing tomorrow. The MAP is a tool our school uses to show student growth throughout the year. We are testing in the morning Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday this week. Please make sure your child has a good breakfast and gets plenty of sleep this week! It is important that they have energy on these days because they can be draining for the kids this early in the year when they are still getting used to being here for the whole day. I'm sure your children have been coming home tired most days, just trying to get used to school.
Picture day is tomorrow. If you would like to buy your child's picture please have them bring the picture order envelope and money. It must be in tomorrow. You will be able to have your child re-take the photo if you do not like it later in October.
Your child will be tested on the words that were sent home last week on Friday. They will only be asked to recognize and read the word, not spell it.
Please remember to turn in your child's writing ideas as soon as possible. The sooner they are turned in, the sooner we will be able to start decorating our "thinking caps".
Also, please continue sending your child to school with their homework. It is important that your child get the extra practice at home.
Thank you for getting all of the required forms in so quickly! Again, if there is anything you need, please let me know.

Week of 9/3/12
We had a great first week! It is such a pleasure to have your children in my class this year. So many of them have great manners and seem to really have a love for school and learning!
Please remember that the Bus Safety, handbook, and party money need to be in this coming week. Also, if you would like to order Scholastic I need the orders online or brought in to me by Friday, September 7. Even if your child does not take the bus, they will need to bring the bus safety form back signed saying they read the form so that they can take the bus on our field trip that we will be taking in January.
We are starting our Math series this week so expect your child to begin coming home with homework. They may have homework every night with this math series but each page will have instructions on how to help your child and for you to also know what your child is expected to be learning throughout the switch to the new Common Core State Standards. As I mentioned at open house, if you have any questions about the new math or how to best help your child, please do not hesitate to ask.
I look forward to this school year and cannot wait to really dive into learning!
Upcoming Dates:
Monday, September 3- No School: Labor Day
